Dann ist Ihr Platz bei uns!

For our Institute of Transportation Systems in Berlin we are looking for a Student natural sciences, engineering, transportation sciences or similar (f/m/x), Development and testing of sensor components on a research bicycle to assess own and surrounding driving behavior

Das erwartet Sie:

The proportion of cyclists overall, but also of cyclists involved in traffic accidents, has increased in most European countries, recently. The reasons for this are, for instant, incorrect and misunderstood traffic behavior, inadequate cycling infrastructure and insufficient knowledge about cyclists' intentions. There is a need for innovation in the integration of cyclists in active safety in traffic and in traffic control at signalized intersections. Bicycles are currently being developed that are equipped with various sensors (e.g. cameras, ultrasound, radar, GNSS) as well as communication technology (V2X communication) and human-machine interfaces (e. g. haptic feedback on the handlebars) in order to provide cyclists and other road users with safety-relevant and traffic efficiency-related information and thus warn them of dangerous traffic situations. The DLR has such a research bicycle, which is to be equipped with new sensory components and put into operation. In this master's thesis, this research bicycle is to be designed, implemented and tested for recording the rider's own riding behavior and the surrounding traffic. A major challenge is to develop a powerful and expandable architecture that can handle the processing of the numerous unsynchronized sensor data on a Jetson pc and store it in a suitable, data GDPR-compliant and fast manner with low latencies. This work thus forms the basis for answering current research questions in connection with future bicycle assistance systems.

As part of a job as a student assistant, an internship or for the preparation of a thesis, you will be assigned the following tasks:

  • familiarization with sensor technology, communication technology and data processing of the bicycle
  • familiarization with the BoB-ROS framework developed at DLR
  • designing and implementing a powerful architecture based on the available components (sensors, PC, peripherals)
  • connection of the sensors to BoB-ROS to provide and analyze the multi-sensor data of the cyclist and the traffic environment
  • data and performance analysis, evaluation
  • publication of the results in a scientific report (e.g. Bachelor or Master thesis) and/or subsequent national or international publication

As a student assistant, you will work up to 20 hours per week.

Das erwarten wir von Ihnen:

  • Security clearance as well as the willingness to security clearance pursuant to §§ 8 ff. Security Clearance Act (SÜG) is a condition for employment at DLR.
  • excellent students immediately prior to their Bachelor's degree or who have completed their Bachelor's degree Bachelor's degree in natural sciences, engineering or transportation sciences
  • enthusiasm for topics related to bicycles, sensor technology, driver assistance systems, traffic safety, traffic control
  • very good communication skills and very good knowledge of English
  • ability to work independently and autonomously
  • security clearance as well as the willingness to security clearance pursuant to §§ 8 ff. Security Clearance Act (SÜG) is a condition for employment at DLR.
  • experience in dealing with ROS (Robot Operating System) and data science is very advantageous
